National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools

On this National Day of Remembrance for Indian boarding schools, GSL joins indigenous communities and government officials across the country reflecting on the lives lost and intergenerational harm caused by U.S. Indian boarding school policies.  These policies, and the laws implementing them, sought to eradicate indigenous language, culture, and identity. The harm these policies caused is immeasurable.

GSL commends U.S. Department of Interior Secretary Deb Haaland who, earlier this year, launched the Federal Boarding School Initiative to conduct a comprehensive review of the legacy of federal boarding school policies on Native communities.  Today, Secretary Haaland also announced that Interior will be consulting with Tribal leaders throughout this process to, among other things, repatriate human remains and honor the lives of those lost and harmed as a result of past U.S. Indian boarding school policies.
