Good Steward Legal Joins the Law Firm Climate Pledge

On August 23, 2021, Good Steward Legal officially signed the Law Firm Climate Pledge established by Law Students for Climate Accountability.  By signing the Pledge, Good Steward Legal has committed “to not take on work to support the fossil fuel industry, now and into the future,” and “to take on some work or continue to work in at least one of the following areas: to support renewable energy development, to address climate change, and to advance climate justice.”

As evidenced by the 2021 Law Firm Climate Change Scorecard, the vast majority of “big” law firms continue to engage in legal representation that directly and indirectly exacerbates climate change and reduces climate accountability.  Although this reality is unsurprising, it highlights the need for businesses, leaders, and others committed to addressing climate change to be more attentive and selective about the firms they hire.

Good Steward Legal’s signature on the Law Firm Climate Pledge signifies its recognition that climate change not only is an existing and serious danger to humanity, but also that it disproportionately and unjustly harms many already-vulnerable populations around the world.  Consistent with its ethos as a principles-based business law office, Good Steward Legal views this pledge as one of many steps it will take to fulfill its commitment to putting principles before profit.
